Curricular Exhibitions and Partnerships

Art DePartment Curricular ProJects 2016-pr4esent

Each academic year I produce between 8-10 academic projects with students and faculty in the Art Department at Appalachian State University. The projects include 1-2 studio art BFA exhibitions per semester, commercial photography portfoliio review events, exhibitions and book fair events with the Graphic Design program and visiting talks, workshops, and experiential learning opportunities for students in the Art History, Art Management, and Art Education programs.

The Art department gallery’s signature exhibition for students is Art and Design Expo— an annual juried student exhibition that features 60+ artworks made by students in the Art and Applied Design departments. For this project I coordinate and install the exhibition with curatorial guidance from a guest juror. As part of Expo, we bring the juror to campus for a set of artistic and professional development opportunities. Past jurors have provided workshops on preparing materials for residencies and galleries, curriculum specific talks with classes and studio visits and one-on- one advice sessions.

Climate Stories Showcase 2017-Present

Climate Stories is a campus wide initiative to embed climate related creative research into course design across campus at Appalachian State University. As a co-facilitator for the project I have worked with faculty colleagues from over 23 departments to support climate literacy and creative research by leading faculty workshops and class sessions, by developing visiting lecture series and programs with visiting artists, and by organizing an annual showcase of student creative research. Since it’s inception Climate Stories has served over 5000 students through its programming.

Additional Curricular ProJects

As the gallery director and one of the main exhibition production experts on campus I consult with faculty and students on developing curriculum related exhibitions and interactive art events. These projects include consultation with honors students interested in producing research based exhibitions as part of their thesis work, and connections with graduate classes in the English department.

In fall of 2023 I provided mentorship and guidance for students and faculty in Eng 5880: Art Objects and English words, which culminated in an exhibition that provided annotations of historical ekphrastic poetry and images from 19th Century Britain.
